We spent four days together with a small group of friends driving a scenic stretch of Highway 82, which juts west toward the Continental Divide just south of Leadville, and twists and turns up over Independence Pass, on to Aspen.
What a special place, just two hours and change from Denver but secluded enough among sloping, towering peaks, protective aspen trees and mirror-surfaced lakes to feel far away from everything.

Gunslinger and gambler Doc Holliday played poker at the saloon. The bar’s name was changed to Silver Dollar Saloon in 1935. The saloon still has an old phone booth, the original tile floor, and the back bar was made by the Brunswick Company.
